Rediscovering authentic Hammam spa treatment

| April 9, 2014 | 2 Comments

A recent visit to the Oriental Spa at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong, gave way to rediscovering the natural remedies needed to cope with modern-day life. A modern-day lifestyle which has many unwanted side-effects: such as unhealthy eating habits, work-life imbalance, simply going non-stop – always “on”: eventually resulting in feeling frazzled or stressed. Thankfully, and quite consciously, we are making an increasing effort in the way we take care our bodies and minds, transitioning from a reactive outlook on health and wellbeing to one that favours a proactive and holistic approach – tackling the root causes often associated with modern-day life.

In search for these natural remedies, attention is drawn to the holistic approach promoted by the Oriental Spa at the Landmark: not least in view of its extensive list of spa and wellness treatments, but for its proclaimed philosophy of bringing “harmony to mind, body and spirit”. Upon arrival, the transition from the hectic surrounds of Central Hong Kong into the expansive spa layout over two levels is the first important step. Warmly welcomed and formally enrolled to relax, the orientation by a well-informed spa attendant gave further assurance that it was time to surrender body and mind to the promise of well being.

Entering the spa sanctuary, familiar hallmarks of a place of wellness instantly stand out: the sounds of water and soft musical harmonies, warm lighting and aromatic smells are effective stimuli. With a number of heat and water treatment options to consider, the real purpose of this spa visit was aimed to experience authentic therapies that have stood the test of time. Such is the Turkish Hammam (for gentlemen only) – a hot steam hydro-therapy treatment which is known to have a miraculous effect on both the mental and physical state of everyone able to enjoy its benefits to the full. A perfect antidote to stress, the hot steam has an all-round soothing and relaxing effect on both body and mind.

Not to be mistaken with an ordinary steam room, the Oriental Spa Hammam is built spaciously, featuring mosaic-tiled contoured seating and foot rests. The intense heat is relaxing, intentionally increasing your body’s circulation. The Hammam is also equipped with two experience showers located within the steam room enclosure, thereby offering an enjoyable cooling sensation. True to the meaning of an ancient ritual, the core of the Hammam experience is focused on cleansing and purification.

Greeted by resident Hammam expert Vali, this involves a short transition into an adjoining room equipped with a heated marble massage table. Here, Vali is the expert therapist who performs a vigorous full-body exfoliation using a pure mixture of cleansing sea salt and a coarse mitts. This procedure results in silky smooth skin and a re-energised feeling. Relaxed and invigorated at the same time, the treatment concluded with a delightful back, shoulder and head massage, confirming this ancient treatment as a natural remedy to cope with modern-day life.
