Men, we are told, are said to become more aesthetically distinguished as we mature in age, unashamedly featuring facial lines and hints of gray hair. Notwithstanding this perception, there is a fine line between the weathered and weather-beaten appearance, hence, we are indeed making an increasing effort in the way we take care of our skin and manly appearance.

A recent visit to the Oriental Spa at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong was prompted by the spa’s distinct philosophy of bringing “harmony to mind, body and spirit”. In pursuit of rejuvenating skin and facial tones, this philosophy served as an intriguing invitation to immerse and “experience”, first hand. Entering the spa sanctuary, familiar hallmarks of a place of wellness instantly stand out: the sounds of water, soft musical harmonies, warm lighting and aromatic smells are effective stimuli. Ushered along warmly lid corridors and a number of private treatment suites, Ruby, assigned to revive this man’s weary skin, extends her warm welcome and invitation to relax.

After the initial assessment of skin type and the best remedy for its revival, therapist Ruby explains the subsequent facial treatment comprising of all-natural Sodashi products, purposeful ingredients and a sequence of meaningful applications. From this moment on, the apparent feel of weightlessness, the gentle tunes of instrumental music, beautiful scent, and a deep sense of ritual being performed, this tailor-made experience takes hold. A memorable moment, indeed, was the facial massage performed in perfect harmony to pressure points around temples, cheek and chin bones, the eyes and nose – stimulating muscles to release unwanted tensions.

Some time on, the gentle sounds of a bell seems to suggest that this skin rejuvenation treatment is nearing completion; designed or imagined, this final ritual may well be in celebration of a new beginning. Relaxed, rejoiced, and reassured that it is worth making an effort to look after our skin, this experiences was quite distinct and in “harmony to mind, body and spirit”
