In the heart of the bustling historical epicenter of Mumbai, The Abode Hotel is the city’s first luxury boutique hotel. Set in a building from 1910, local architect and interior designer Sian Pascale has created a tranquil haven by combining local antiques and vintage detailing with modern luxurious design.

Preserving the cultural heritage of the city, the over 100-year-old building features carefully handcrafted 20th century, Colonial and Art Deco furniture selected from Bombay’s second hand markets, and restored for the property. The furniture pieces include bedside tables made from Burma teak hardwood and bedroom light fittings created by using hand-thrown ceramic and turned hardwood lamp holders.

Each of the hotel’s 20 rooms feature an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in rain shower. Several include a freestanding vintage bath tub. A Mumbai tile maker using his 100-year old techniques crafted the unique art deco floor tiles.

In addition to the hotel’s permanent vintage furniture, the hotel continuously supports local designers and craftspeople by exhibiting and selling their handcrafted art in the hotel shop. Included in the assortment are a selected range of products including handwoven scarfs and tribal jewellery. The hotel offers a spa room, fitness class packages with local gyms offering Pilates and boxing. As well as yoga and meditation classes.

The Abode Lobby and Library functions as an all day café and flexible working area. It features an original 19th Century vintage chandelier that celebrates Mumbai’s design heritage.

In 1910, during the city’s commercial heyday, the property began as a private residence of David Sassoon, one of Bombay’s most industrious entrepreneurs. A local family specializing in antiquities acquired the property in 1982. They ran it as a small guesthouse for many years until the Abode luxury boutique hotel was opened in 2013.
